~ 27 ~

After days of storms, the sun broke through the clouds. Bright light poured through the windows over our dining table the next day, promising an end to our crew’s cabin fever. We sat drinking coffee, eating cereal, and craving the beach.

Secret glances and goofy smiles added flavor to the breakfast. Deck joked about rounding home with me last night, and Judge’s brows nearly hit the ceiling. Both man-giggled over their bowls to avoid my glare.

Since Decker and I had resolved the issue last night, I could now appreciate the frivolity behind the delay. I decided to tease my target and work on my wager. “Fucking baseball? Really, Judge?”

He rolled his eyes. “Come on, Callie.”

“Wait. What happened?” Shay asked.

“After you finished, our boys lounged around your room watching TV.”

Mia shook her head. “Weird, Deck. Seriously.”

Evan took a long draw from his cup. “Not necessarily. Which game?”

“Cubs and Cardinals.”

“Yeah, I can see it.”

“Not only did he not come get me,” I added dramatically, “he stayed in there for an additional thirteen minutes after I knocked.”

“She was clockin’ us?” Judge mumbled.

Don’t laugh.

“Girl, you should’ve left his ass,” Mia told me. “We were at it all night.”

Deck was conveniently keeping his cocky mouth out of it. He simply shoveled in spoons of marshmallow cereal and smirked like the devil as he chewed.

“After the knock?” Evan stroked his stubble. “That’s a tough one.”

Shay piped up. “No. It’s not tough. At all. Had I known, I would’ve kicked them both out.”

Judge gestured to her with his spoon. “And that’s why we turned down the volume.”

My insides shook with suppressed giggles, but I was determined to use this to my advantage. I also couldn’t let my man gain the upper hand. He was clever enough to run his own race without my push, and I couldn’t take anything for granted.

Deck finally spoke up, palming his bare pecs. “In my defense, Chicago was up by one in the bottom of the ninth.”

Evan considered that. “I hope St. Louis came back. If not, what a waste.”

“They did.” Judge grinned. “Won it with a walk-off.”

He shrugged matter-of-factly. “Sorry, girls.”

“She was pissed,” Deck roasted at my expense. “You should’ve heard her all fired up.”

“You guys fuck like six times a day,” Judge piled on. “You’re really mad that he spent ten minutes watching baseball with a buddy?”

Decker faked a cough. “You mean thirteen.”

This fuckin’ guy.

I needed to garner more sympathy. “No, I’m not mad that he watched baseball. But on Three Doors night? While we’re floating? After the knock?”

Mia patted my hand. “They don’t get it, Callie. They didn’t see how wet you were when you left our room.”

Deck sighed. “Damn, Mia. A little salt in the wound?”

“Hey, you earned it, mister.”

“Honestly, though, it was the lesser of two evils,” I said.

“What was the other option?” Evan asked.

“Shay going rogue again.”

She scoffed beside me. “I think you know me better than that.”

“I thought I did, but I couldn't be sure after hearing you dined downtown.” I sealed my lips with a grin.
